The UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion aims to turn the fashion industry into a model for implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Fashion for Conservation (FFC) Co-founders Ava J. Holmes and Laura Choi were among those honored to present the keynote in 2018 (learn more about this specific forum here). Today, FFC continues to discuss and model Sustainable Development Goals through events, panels, blog posts, and social media, sharing how anyone can contribute to meeting and living these goals daily. Check out the below video of FFC’s and the UN’s collaboration, with special guest social media influencer, and DJ, Elle L.

The UN describes it’s 17 sustainable goals as, “the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. You can learn more about each specific goal here. The UN hopes to achieve them all by 2030. While all the goals are interconnected in many ways, the UN Fashion Alliance monitors goal #12 in particular – Responsible Consumption and Production.

    Fashion’s Influence on Sustainable Development

The fashion industry is a $2.4 trillion industry. Considering its size and global reach, the industry itself is responsible for 8-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for 20% of industrial wastewater pollution worldwide. The fashion industry is only expected to grow, so we have to commit to doing better. On the upside, there are already many great sustainable ideas and action items within the industry so the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion is consistently working to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and outreach.
